Nurturing Gut Health

As we’ve written about previously, gut health and virtually all other systems of the body are intrinsically linked. This evidently contributes to our overall wellbeing.

There have been numerous studies conducted to highlight the relationship between gut health and brain function/mood. For more information about these studies feel free to read our article ‘The Brain and The Micobiome’.

With modern day western lifestyles, our gut flora is frequently out of balance, creating a condition known as dysbiosis. What this means is that the protective (good) bacteria have been largely destroyed, allowing harmful, opportunistic pathogens a chance to become dominant. Our gut flora is impacted by a number of factors, from the way in which we are born, whether or not we are breastfed, surgeries, drugs, (especially antibiotics), stress and diet. It is important to remember that what we eat not only nourishes us but also feeds our gut bacteria and influences diversity and the ratio of microbes.

The question remains as to what we can do to correct dysbiosis and encourage healthy gut flora. The most immediate measure we can take is to stop feeding the gut microbes processed foods and excess sugar. Secondly, encouraging healthy gut flora by including pro-biotic and pre-biotic foods or a good quality pro-biotic supplement would, in most cases, be desirable*.

That brings us to one of our favourite (and most delicious) ways to encourage a healthy gut… And that is the inclusion of Jiva Kombucha in our daily regime. Kombucha is a fermented probiotic beverage that aids with digestion and detoxification, as well as assisting with weight loss and helping to increase energy and immunity.

Jiva are committed to using fresh, locally sourced ingredients which is evident from the taste. They have a great range of flavours including watermelon and mint, ginger, pineapple and original… All are delicious but our favourites are pineapple and ginger.

Another great product range targeting the important issue of gut health is Ifnite with their range of chocolates and superfood treats. All Ifnite products contain highly bioavailable plant proteins, digestive enzymes and probiotics (the chocolate coffee beans are a personal fave!)

While gut health is a huge societal issue given the amount of sugar and processed foods we consume, it is very encouraging to see so many great products emerging with a focus on improving our gut flora. These products are delicious making it easy to increase our intake of probiotics and digestive enzymes and in doing so, they will enhance our overall health.

*It is important to note that when it comes to introducing fermented foods/beverages into your diet, too much, too soon can make symptoms worse for some, especially those sensitive to FODMAPS or tyramines. In these cases, the help of a nutritionist is recommended.
